Happy couples aren’t necessarily perfect but there are certain habits that they’ve perfected over the course of their marriages which provide anchors in their marriage. As Muslims, our one unbreakable belief is that Allah is witness to our intents, desires and actions and this belief goes a long way in making a happy and successful marriage.
You make trust and forgiveness your default mode. This is one of those things that is easier said than done. But if done right, the rewards are great and long-lasting. Give your spouse the benefit of the doubt even when you feel it is their fault – they will love and appreciate you for it and it will make your married life so much happier.
You are generous with your compliments. Compliments cost nothing in the giving but can brighten up your spouse’s day. Be true, be honest, but also be generous with your compliments. This is a great way of validation and will serve to make your spouse feel valuable and loved.
You show love every day, not just on special occasions. Showing love on birthdays and anniversaries is a given, but it’s the love that show your spouse every day that will make your married life absolute bliss.
You listen to understand, not to reply. Life is hard and your spouse may face many tough people and interactions outside of the house. Make sure that inside the house, they feel welcome, loved, and are heard. Acknowledging your spouse is one of the greatest gifts you can give them in any interaction. Feeling they are heard goes a long way, as opposed to it becoming a debate where one side is trying to outwit the other.
You accept each other, without trying to change each other. This is another one of those easier-said-than-done things that serves big payouts. The world (or your spouse) is not going to adapt it to yourself, you must adapt to it. Once you realize and start practicing this, your married life and life in general will become so much better.
